Information on ceramic tile installation
concepts, products & techniques. This will be a growing section as there is a lot to cover. I'll start with my focus on shower installation products and soon there will be links at the sides covering everything including assessment & preparation, protective membranes & proper underlayment, layout and design, various installation techniques and grouting. Soon, it will all be right here, in Randy Gilmore's website.

Here I want to expand on some new school tile installation products that
have certainly gotten my respect. Let's start with shower installations.
These are technical, time consuming and expensive. As installers, we
tend to pride ourselves in our old school techniques, but let's face it,
times are changing. There are risks we deal with every time we build a
shower. In large homes, we are dealing with large spans built with
lumber that has dropped in quality and the engineering??? I don't know
about you but I get nervous about the stress our showers are undertaking
when these big home start settling. If a membrane tears, we are out time
and money fixing it (it's always our fault) or in court we're in court
spending time and even more money. These things happen even with the
best planning and judgment. I have been using Wedi shower products since
early 2005, and have had absolutely no problems. I had one tile shower
(in a large home) settle 1/2" on one end within a 5 foot span. It
survived! No leaks! No joke! I had to fix some cracked grout joints as
you would expect, as well as some vertical caulking. It wasn't bad
enough for the pitch to become an issue. Lucky me. If you haven't seen this product, I strongly recommend it. Below I will list some of Wedi's product details. Just take a look and see for yourself. This will give you a little insight and a link to the Wedi Corp will be placed below for further information. This product does just as well with natural stone such as granite, travertine, marble and limestone. I don't recommend slate in showers. That's me. The literature and illustrations provided in this section are from the Wedi Corp.
wedi fundo system - the total solution for wet areas There are many ways to prepare and waterproof a shower for ceramic tile. Traditional methods are time consuming and difficult to do properly. Newer experimental methods commonly contain material flaws and suffer from a poor track record of successful installations. Failures in showers amount to millions of dollars lost to contractors, homeowners, and builders. Water damage leads to mold and mildew issues, which in turn increase warranty cost and the number of unsatisfied homeowners.
The wedi Fundo Shower Pan is a one step waterproofing system that offers a no risk, easy to install alternative. The wedi Fundo pan is composed of a closed cell extruded polystyrene foam, making it 100% waterproof. The pan is coated with a modified cement slurry and fiberglass mesh for strength and rigidity.
The wedi Fundo waterproof shower pan used in conjunction with the wedi building panels on the wall takes away multiple installation steps and materials used in conventional installations. It eliminates pre-sloping, pan liners, mud beds, waterproofing membranes and the weephole drain. It also eliminates risks related to conventional installations such as pan liner cracks, clogged weepholes and mold growth in mud beds.
